To mark the release of the video game *Diablo IV* by the American studio Blizzard Entertainment, the Jesuit Chapel in the city of Cambrai is adorned with incredible, hand-painted demonic frescoes.
The objectives of this murals by the game Diablo IV
The idea was to create something epic, reminiscent of the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
John Mueller, Art Director for Diablo IV
The paintings, spread across 220 m², follow the storyline of the video game. At the entrance, the five characters the player can choose from at the start are displayed. The goal is to reach the far end of the chapel, where Lilith—a female demon from Jewish tradition and the game’s final boss—awaits.
The artists who created this work in the Cambrai Chapel
Painters from all over the world worked tirelessly to achieve the most realistic result possible. Among them was Adam Miller, an American artist well-known in the art world. Installing these paintings was a lengthy process, as they had to be hung at a height of over 20 meters—all without compromising the integrity of the chapel. The City has also reached an agreement with the company to ensure that the chapel’s ceiling is restored after the exhibition.
The pop-up exhibition “In Diablo’s Lair”
The building and the artworks were featured in a trailer and are also the focus of an exhibition running from May 6, 2023, to June 11, 2023, titled “In the Lair of Diablo.” Afterward, the artworks will be removed and installed in a game show in Los Angeles.
To see the frescoes, visit the Jesuit Chapel at 7 Place du Saint-Sépulcre, 59400 Cambrai.
