What is anamorphosis?

First, a little etymology. The word comes from the Greek "ana," meaning transformation, and "morphosis," meaning form. Thus, it is the art of transforming shapes based on perspective. More concretely, anamorphosis is a three-dimensional optical illusion. An anamorphosis artwork can only be seen from a very specific point in space. The further one moves from this point, the more the artwork deconstructs. To achieve this, several surfaces (walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, etc.) are painted, some closer than others. But the best way to understand is to see an example in pictures.

How to create an anamorphosis?

Generally, to create an anamorphosis, we project the artwork onto the desired area. For outdoor spaces, this is done at night so the projector is more visible. Then, we draw the outlines of the artwork. This is the most technical part. Once the outlines are complete, we move on to painting. For certain surfaces, like glass, we prefer to use custom-made adhesives, as adhesive adheres better than paint on these materials.

We work on various surfaces

First, we create anamorphosis both indoors and outdoors.

Most frequently, it's indoors. For example, we create anamorphosis in bars, restaurants, shops, offices, corridors, etc. The possibilities are endless. The advantage of indoor spaces is that we can play with furniture and incorporate it into the anamorphosis. Generally, the anamorphosis is oriented to be visible from the room's entrance door, creating an immediate and spectacular effect.

We also create anamorphosis outdoors. For instance, on stairs, where the anamorphosis is visible from the bottom of the steps. Similarly, we create anamorphosis on playgrounds or car parks.

Examples of anamorphosis projects

Anamorphosis in hotel rooms and reception area

The agencies Myllième architecture and 1001 vies architectes commissioned us to create two anamorphosis artworks in the "eat & drink" area of the Graphik Montparnasse hotel. They are positioned to catch the eye immediately upon entering the lobby from both entrances. These anamorphosis pieces are inspired by the hotel's logo, featuring a blue circle and a yellow square. In addition to paint, we used adhesives for certain surfaces.

An anamorphosis for the new toy library in the city of Puteaux

We worked in a toy library in the city of Puteaux. The request was to create an anamorphosis at the average height of an 11-year-old child, who are the primary users of the space. They will see the artwork form and deform as they walk through this 15-meter long corridor.

Striking decoration in a company's offices

Discover this incredible artwork in Winamax's offices. This anamorphosis almost makes us lose our balance when descending the stairs. The colors are inspired by the company's identity (red, gray, black). A decorative mural that leaves a lasting impression.

A playful anamorphosis to spark children's imagination

We created an anamorphic mural designed for the youngest visitors of Les Chempéa shopping center in Reims. The goal is to transform a simple passageway into a visual playground, where the magic of perspective stimulates curiosity and wonder for families.

Location: Reims (51100)

What is the budget for an anamorphosis?

It all depends on the type of project. Here are the main factors that influence the budget:

  • Decorative or artistic? If it's a purely decorative artwork, without artistic ambition, then the design is inexpensive. However, if you want an artist's signature, the design and rights transfer can be a significant cost.
  • Dimensions. Naturally, the budget depends on the size of the artwork.
  • Surface(s). Some surfaces are more technical than others. Indeed, paint and adhesives don't always adhere well, which can lead to additional costs.
  • Accessibility. If the artwork is to be created in an indoor office, the budget is limited. However, if the work requires a lift or other equipment, the budget increases.

Ultimately, to give you an idea, expect to pay 100 to 400 euros per m².
